WELCOME
Welcome to the Saint Andrew's Society of Los Angeles.
First founded during the colonial times the Saint Andrew's societies continue to flourish, furthering their fundamental purpose of achieving charitable and cultural causes within the ambience of Scottish heritage. From Charleston, South Carolina in 1729; Savanna in 1750; New York 1756; Philadelphia in 1847; they have propagated to our West Coast with San Francisco in 1883 and our own Los Angeles in 1930.
Founders James Loundon, OBE (1882-1975) and Alexander S. Cowie (1882-1969) sought to follow the same honorable tradition notwithstanding the vast changes the have occurred in our world with the passage of time.
In a modern world we enjoy a place in heraldic history through recognition by the Lord Lyon King of Arms, at Edinburgh, as a Society Noble in the Noblesse of Scotland, attested by Ensigns Armorial and our motto "Scotia Semper Patria".
We have focused our charitable activates in recent years on such worthy organizations as the associated Judges and Teachers of Highland Dancing in California; the Celtic Arts Center in Hollywood and in Scotland, the Restoration of Burn's House; the National Trust; at the Costa Mesa games we have served as Stewards for the National Museum of Scotland in their new wing construction which has allowed for the public display of Heirlooms and artifacts that have been stored for centuries in the sub-floors of the old museum.
At the Costa Mesa Games we have for many years presented the Kimberly Cameron Trophy for the Adult Scottish Dance Competition; an award of $ 1500.00 the Edinburgh Medal winner in Dancing together with the Loudon Trophy for the heavy-weight athletes who compete in the Caber toss.
At the Sea Side Highland Games in Ventura we have presented the Cairn California Award with $ 1500.00 to the overall winner in highland dancing.
The Society was incorporated as a non-profit, Tax Exempt California Corporation, with federal exemptions a 501 (c) (3) IRS classification.
Our society's board of trustees regularly reviews membership applications from persons recommended by them, or to them by fellow members for the society at large. Qualification focuses on a strong connection with Scotland by birth, lineage, and or a sincere interest and concern for the culture, history, music and arts of Scotland as shown by the candidate.
Our members enjoy the opportunity of sharing social amenities at festivities throughout the year that include a New- Member reception in May, the Annual Garden Party in June, both activities that are hosted as a delightful home of a member; together with a Kirkin 'O ' The Tartans at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church in October followed by a no-host luncheon, usually at McCormick and Schmicks on Rodeo Drive.
In January we are to be found at The Beach Club in Santa Monica for a dinner dance in honor of Saint Andrews Day and the Burn's birthday celebration complete with haggis. Should the modest introduction encourage you to inquire further and perhaps to meet with us on one of our occasions please feel free to contact.
